North American Nebula

This is an emission nebula about 1500 light years away and about 60
light year wide, appropriately named the North American Nebula. The
extreme density of stars in this picture show that this nebula lies
directly in the band of the Milky Way. The "Gulf of Mexico" area of the
nebula is not caused by an absence of glowing hydrogen gas, but by a vast
cloud of dark dusk in front of the it that obscures the nebula behind it.
